What Is an IPL Photofacial?

Light that targets what you see. Results that speak for themselves.

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a traditional laser that uses one focused wavelength, IPL uses pulses of broad-spectrum light to target multiple skin concerns at once, including unwanted pigment and visible redness.

During treatment, light energy is absorbed by areas of excess pigment and visible vessels beneath the skin. Over time, your body naturally clears the treated areas, leaving your complexion clearer, brighter, and more even. At Well Aesthetics, every treatment is customized for your unique skin.

Nordlys®

SWT® IPL Technology

At Well Aesthetics, IPL Photofacial treatments are performed using the Candela Nordlys® platform with advanced SWT® IPL technology. This allows light energy to be filtered and customized for specific skin concerns, including pigmentation, redness, vascular concerns, and overall photorejuvenation.

Because every patient's skin is different, treatment settings are selected based on your skin type, treatment area, concerns, and candidacy. Our focus is always healthy skin, natural-looking results, and personalized care.

1

Consultation

We'll evaluate your skin, discuss your concerns, review your recent sun exposure, and determine if IPL is appropriate for your skin type and goals.

2

Treatment

Protective eyewear is worn and pulses of light are delivered to the treatment area. Most appointments take about 20 to 45 minutes depending on the area.

3

Common Questions

IPL Photofacial FAQ

What is an IPL Photofacial?
An IPL Photofacial is a light-based skin treatment that helps improve pigmentation, sun damage, redness, broken capillaries, and overall uneven skin tone using pulses of broad-spectrum light energy.
How many IPL treatments will I need?
Many patients benefit from a series of 3 to 5 treatments. The exact number depends on your skin concerns, treatment goals, and how your skin responds.
Is IPL the same as laser resurfacing?
No. IPL targets pigment and visible redness using broad-spectrum pulses of light. Laser resurfacing uses focused laser energy and is better suited for acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and deeper texture concerns.
Is there downtime after IPL?
Most patients experience little to no downtime. Mild redness or warmth is common, and brown spots may temporarily darken before flaking away over several days.
Does IPL hurt?
Most patients describe IPL as a quick snap against the skin. Treatment is generally well tolerated.
Can I get IPL if I have a tan?
No. IPL should be avoided with recent sun exposure, tanning, or self-tanner. Treating recently tanned skin can increase the risk of irritation, burns, or pigmentation changes.
Can IPL help with rosacea?
IPL may help improve visible facial redness associated with rosacea in appropriate candidates. A consultation is needed to determine if IPL is the right treatment for your skin.
When will I see results?
Some patients notice brighter, clearer skin after one treatment. Pigmented spots often darken first, then gradually flake away over several days. Redness and vessels improve more gradually.
Can IPL be combined with other treatments?
Yes. IPL may be combined with medical-grade skincare, facials, chemical peels, RF microneedling, or laser resurfacing as part of a personalized skin plan. Your provider will help determine the right combination for your goals.
